In this video, I talk about the myth of the Trojan War, and reconstruct Helen’s face according to the golden ratio and ancient Greek & Mycenaean beauty standards.

Since Helen’s story lives in the realm of mythology, it differs depending on who is telling it. Her personality and beauty traits change  depending on the author – and of course the author’s own idea of what the perfect woman looks like.

Homer’s works barely give us anything – we get three descriptors: “White-armed”, “Long-Dressed” and “Lovely Haired”. Perhaps Homer was intentionally vague, so that each reader could construct their own vision of Helen of Troy.

I prefer the Mycenaean-styled Helen, with the exception of the rosette decorations which look like blemishes to me. I think dark-haired women always look more powerful. As to whether she could have launched a 1000 ships, men have done many foolish things over the course of history, so I suppose it’s possible. Of course, women frequently get blamed for traumatic events, so it’s plausible to think the Trojans would have blamed the entire mess on her!
