Richard III

An updated version of this article is available here.

Richard III was the last Plantagenet monarch of England. Famously, he has both staunch defenders and detractors in the historical community. Before the Richard III Society began defending his historical legacy, Richard was known as a cruel cripple who probably killed the two children who were the greatest threat to his throne. His body was famously recovered from underneath a parking lot in 2012, proving that he did have scoliosis (which was depicted in this portrait of him, and why I raised his right shoulder in my recreation image), and that he died of battlefield wounds. Richard’s face was recreated using computer technology in 2013 by Caroline Wilkinsin (swipe to see that reconstruction), a professor at the University of Dundee under funding from the Richard III society. I watched a GREAT documentary about the unearthing of Richard’s skeleton and the bust recreation on Smithsonian Channel a while back, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. That one is called Secrets: Richard III Revealed. I would love to know what you all personally think he was like? Underneath so much myth and lore it’s very difficult to tell.
